🇨🇳🇭🇰 Femtech Market Map Analysis: Mainland China & Hong Kong

From the June 2025 market map analysis conducted by Zhu Yihan from FemTech Weekend and Maaike Steinebach from FemTech Future in collaboration with FemTech Association Asia.

This report provides an overview of the rapidly growing FemTech market in China. In recent years, the industry has entered a phase of fast expansion, supported by favourable developments across policy, economic, social and technological fronts.

This momentum is expected to continue in the coming years. It is important to note that in China, FemTech is still an evolving concept. Currently, the market landscape is primarily shaped by innovations in medical technology (MedTech) and biotechnology (Biotech), with a focus on solutions related to women's health. As awareness and interest in this sector grow, the scope of FemTech is expected to broaden over time.

Consumer Trends Across Both Regions

Surging Demand for Egg Freezing

With c. 400 million women in the workforce from both Mainland China and HongKong SAR, it has witnessed growing demand for egg freezing. Women prioritise career achievements, with 68% of urban women citing professional fulfillment as a key driver. High childcare costs (averaging 20-30% of household income) and challenges in forming romantic connections, exacerbated by the rise of AI companions (market projected at $1.2 billion by 2027), fuel this trend. Egg freezing policies in Mainland China and Hong Kong differ significantly in terms of eligibility, legal framework, and implementation. Due to restrictions, many women from Mainland China seek egg freezing services abroad.

Consumer Trends Across Both Regions

Traditional Chinese Medicine Preference

TCM’s influence drives demand for non￾invasive treatments using natural ingredients and non-surgical procedures. Innovations like AI-driven pulse diagnostics, adopted by 15% of TCM clinics in 2024, enhance accessibility and precision.

Consumer Trends Across Both Regions

Women's Empowerment

Post-2018 #MeToo movement, awareness of women in leadership has risen, with women holding 12% of C-suite roles in China and increased visibility in public discourse.

However the movement in Mainland China exists in a more subtle, fragile, and restricted form compared to other countries. Gender equality is framed more as a state-led agenda than a civil rights issue, making independent feminist activism politically sensitive. A quiet form of activism still exists, often through private networks, creative expression, or legal education.

Chinese Women are more inclined to support brands and platforms that align with values of autonomy, safety, and dignity, even if they don’t overtly market themselves as “feminist.”

Mainland China FemTech Market Overview

Menstrual Health Commercialisation Challenges

Despite menstrual health’s importance, app-based models (e.g., Clue, Flo) in Mainland China struggle due to low consumer willingness to pay. Revenue from ads and e-commerce is limited, as platforms cannot compete with giants like Alibaba and JD.com, which control 70% of e-commerce in China.

IVF Boom - Low Fertility Rates driven

China’s fertility rate at 1 births per woman, drives IVF demand, supported by government subsidies covering up to 30% of costs. The IVF market reached $1.8 billion in 2024, with 600,000 cycles annually.

Genetic Sequencing in Women’s Health

In 2024, the genetic testing market in China reached $2.1 billion, with a 20% annual growth rate. Applications include carrier screening for hereditary diseases, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) used by 5 million pregnant women annually.

Social Media and Live Commerce drive women’s health education

The “live-to-sell” model ( 直 播 带 货 ), generating $700 billion in 2024, empowers gynecologists to educate as influencers. However, trust remains critical, as misinformation risks erode credibility.

Early Cervical & Breast Cancer Screening Encouragement

With 110,000 new Cervical cancer cases annually in China, underscores the critical need for early screening. Government￾backed programs, covering 20 million women in 2024, and AI-assisted diagnostics in 50% of urban centers reduce mortality by 30% through early intervention. AI-powered imaging for early Breast cancer detection, used in 40% of urban hospitals, reduces diagnostic burdens and improves outcomes.

Sexual Health Growth

The sexual health market, valued at $900 million in 2024, thrives on physical products and platforms like Xiaohongshu, which has 200 million monthly active users. These platforms drive education and engagement on sexual health.

Hong Kong FemTech Market Overview

Emerging Market

Hong Kong's Femtech ecosystem was established less than five years ago, making it a small but rapidly growing sector. The rise of health-focused accelerators and a growing number of Femtech-related events suggests accelerating growth.

Technology Maturity

Most existing solutions remain relatively low-tech, indicating room for technological advancement. There is a noticeable gap in advanced diagnostics, AI-based health tracking, or hardware development. This points to an opportunity for tech upgrading and deeper R&D investment.

Incubation Hub

The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks (HKSTP) plays a central role in supporting digital health and biotech startups. In recent years, there has been a surge of Femtech innovations within the park, including companies working on HPV screening and early cervical cancer diagnostics, backed by government R&D grants and clinical pilot programs.

Core Focus Areas

The primary areas of innovation are menstruation, menopause, and fertility, all gaining increasing momentum. The attention to menopause is growing, as evidenced by recent HKSTP startup cohorts including solutions targeting midlife women.

Cross Border Interest

Hong Kong is increasingly seen as a gateway for regional Femtech players. Companies from Singapore, Mainland China, and Taiwan are entering the market to leverage access to Hong Kong’s funding landscape, insurance headquarters, and multinational corporate presence. This cross-border interest is supported by participation in regional health conferences and incubator programs.

Business Model Shift

Initially dominated by B2C solutions, the market is now seeing a pivot toward B2B models - such as workplace menopause support programs and partnerships with clinics - to tap into recurring revenue and scale via institutions.

Hong Kong Consumer Perspectives

Results from the FemTech Association Asia online survey of 209 HKID holders in December 2023. Qualified participants included women* residents of Hong Kong, 18+ years old.

Opportunity: GBA as an Entry Point to China

The Greater Bay Area (GBA) is a national economic development initiative that integrates 11 cities in southern China, including major centers like Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, into a unified innovation and business ecosystem. The GBA is positioned as China’s premier high￾tech and open-market region, with strong links to global finance, biotech, and manufacturing. For new entrants to China’s women’s health innovation market, the GBA may offer a more attractive launchpad than traditional hubs like Beijing or Shanghai.
